fter it emerges from the Jura gorges, after providing the links in a chain of hydroelectric dams, the Ain meanders through a vast plain before flowing into the Rhône near Lyon. Over the 50 last kilometres of its course, free at last and nonchalantly making its way across the plain, the Ain's bed is modelled by its floods, creating a mosaic of natural habitats, which are home to a variety of wild fauna and flora exceptional in Europe. Aware of its territory's rich heritage, but also of its fragility, the Syndicat de la Basse Vallée de l'Ain (Lower Ain Valley association) has appealed to Europe to help it preserve the site..
